Good News – SB 115 Vetoed!

On June 18, 2011, in Uncategorized, by admin

I would like to thank all of you that sent e-mails, faxes, and letters, or called our Governor requesting he veto SB115.  Today he vetoed the bill. I am very glad to see that patients will not have to worry about the negative impact such one-sided legislation would have had on emergency services.  It sometimes takes small but deliberate steps to defend the patient-physician relationship but every life is worth it.  Today is a great day for Nevadans!

Annette Teijeiro, MD

Dear Nevada AAPS members and friends,

Please read the urgent message below from Dr. Annette Teijeiro regarding how you can help stop Nevada Senate Bill 115.  Click here to read the bill. (pdf format)

The opening explanation to the bill reads as follows: “AN ACT relating to health care; requiring certain hospitals and physicians to accept certain rates as payment in full for the provision of certain services and care to certain patients…”

Thank you!

Hello everyone,

First of all I wish you all a wonderful summer.   I am writing you with some urgency (we only have a few days to make our concerns known) to request that you write the Governor to veto a very bad piece of legislation that made it out of our Nevada State Legislature, Senate Bill 115.  This bill affects all Nevadans in an adverse way and it does not fix the problem that its proponents tout.

Here is what I foresee as the effect of this bill:

  1. Interference with arms length health care contracts (private business contracts)
  2. Creation of an environment not conducive to recruitment of health care professionals
  3. Decreased number of physicians on call in the emergency rooms
  4. Increased problems with access to health care services for patients
  5. Financial rewards to third party health plans with inadequate provider networks
  6. Increased costly legal battles through our already jam packed judicial system

If you are a business owner this could impact you sooner than you think.  Once the Nevada State Legislature is able to set into statute the reimbursement of services rendered in the health care industry, this sets the precedent for other professional services that may be deemed necessary to cost control.  Our health care work force is well below the national average and legislation such as this will make it difficult to recruit the best and the brightest to come to Nevada in the future because we will not be competitive.  This bill also creates a shift of the financial burden to the Nevada taxpayer by making it easier for health plans not to contract directly with adequate numbers of providers to fulfill their promise of health care coverage and higher administrative costs to battle the court cases that may occur because of this abuse.

The bill forces the health care industry to perform discounted services determined through the Nevada State Legislature, outside of free market forces, while allowing the health plan to save money.  So you pay for health care coverage and the health plans reap the benefit of forced legislative discounts that can shift insidiously every legislative session.  Please help me protect the interest of Nevadans before it is too late.

Here are ways to get your requests to the Governor via telephone, fax, e-mail and snail mail:

Office: (775) 684-5670

Fax: (775) 684-5683

Office of the Governor
101 North Carson Street
Carson City, NV 89701

Please send the request for a veto of SB115 ASAP.  He has not signed it as of yesterday but he only has 10 days from when the Nevada State Legislature closed (June 6, 2011) to decide so time is of the essence!

Annette Teijeiro, M.D.
